Compare and contrast the narrator and the speaker’s attitudes and realizations of “ losing someone”

In Sharon Olds poem, “High School Senior” and Susie Kretschmer short story. “And Summer Is Gone”. Both the speaker and the narrator show a non-regretful feeling about love but actually they can’t forget the girl that they had relationship with.

In the poem “High School Senior”, the speaker trying to memorize the moment that he spent with her daughter. “Seventeen years ago she moved inside me.”(Line 19) They had live together for seventeen years from which he remembering “her breath in the house.”(Line 1) The speaker first said that “My daughter is free and she is in me.” Then the speaker said “no, my love of her is in me, moving in my heart.” (From line 27 to line 28)Shows that the girl was always in his heart no matter where she lived now. But obviously, the speaker was losing everything and he was just trying to make himself a self esteem.

In the short story “And Summer Is Gone”, the narrator writes about how he and Amy fall in love. “I remember how it felt to have that line stretching between us, connecting us even though we were apart, for that was how I always felt with her.”(Paragraph 7) Then the girl started to change to another person that he felt strange with. “Yet as her body changed, she herself changed.”(Paragraph 13) Finally, Amy separated with him forever as he finally find out “Amy turned her back on me, but not before I heard her assenting “Yeah, I know.” And she left laughing.”(Paragraph 26) As he knew that Amy left him and he was alone now. He started to remember the happy moment that they had before “I watched her go, and I cried within.”(Paragraph 27) But the fact is that no matter how he remembering the love, “Amy is gone.”(Paragraph 27)

Though, two articles had a tragic ending and both of the writer had the similar feeling when they losing someone. The only difference is that in the Poem “High School Senior” He is losing his own daughter, which is his only girl in his life and in the short story “And Summer Is Gone” he is losing a girl which is the true love of his life.
